Domain Rating (DR) scores are not a new phrase in the world of SEO, but there are many bloggers who are unaware of the domain rating and its importance.

This is a search engine ranking score that was developed by Ahrefs, which predicts how well the website will rank on search engine results pages (SERPs). A domain rating score ranges from 0 to 100, 0 as weakest and 100 strongest.

Earlier a website was weighted based on its page-rank. Now, Ahrefs domain rating and Moz domain Authority play a major role in the ranking of any domain.

Ahrefs domain rating is calculated by evaluating several factors, including the number of domains and total links in the DA score. This score can be used when websites are tracked or compared to the website’s “Ranking Strength” over time.

On February 2nd, 2018, Ahrefs introduced a new metrics “Domain Rating”. As a result, most of the sites domain rating dropped to about 0 because they did not have enough link profiles or had too many spam links.

How Domain Rating Calculated?

Regarding the quality and size of the website’s backlink profile, Ahrefs calculates the domain’s rating (DR) and shows the total backlink and strength of a website.

  1. Firstly it checks the number of the unique domain with at least one do-follow backlink from the website.
  2. Now it checks the domain rating (DR) of the domains that are linked.
  3. Calculating the number of unique domain links for the linked websites.
  4. Now calculating the DR scores using several mathematical and coding algorithms.
  5. Finally organizing the domain rating scores based on a 0-100 scale.

Multiple links from a single website do not improve your Domain Rating (DR). In addition, if your website getting only the “no-follow” backlink, then your website’s domain rating will not increase.
